Krefeld is a large city on the left bank of the Rhine in the Lower Rhine region, northwest of the state capital Düsseldorf and southwest adjoining Duisburg and the Ruhr area. The independent city in the Düsseldorf administrative district is also known as the "Velvet and Silk City" due to its silk production in the 18th and 19th centuries. With around 220,058 inhabitants, Krefeld ranks in the mid-range among the major cities of North Rhine-Westphalia. Following the decline of the textile industry, the focus of the companies based in Krefeld lies in the chemical industry (5.3 per cent of employees), metal industry (5.2 per cent), mechanical engineering (4.2 per cent) and vehicle manufacturing (4.1 per cent). Nevertheless, the textile industry still holds considerable importance. As part of structural change, the city has experienced a significant reduction in jobs in recent decades (minus 19.3 per cent between 1976 and 2009).
