Ratingen has enjoyed town rights since 1276, but graves indicate settlement here as early as 500 BCE. What once was a medieval settlement of a few hundred people has become a mid-sized town with 86,636 inhabitants on a total area of 88.74 km² (2014). Above all, the castles and manor houses built between the 13th and the 17th centuries shape the townscape and make much of Ratingen a sightseeing attraction. From experience, however, our private detectives in Ratingen know that everyday and sometimes modern problems still occur even in such a culturally and historically rich setting:

Until the late 15th century Ratingen’s economy was dominated by smithing and grinding crafts (tools, weapons, musical instruments), but it collapsed in the 16th century when plague struck, the population fell and Düsseldorf became the government residence. In 1641 Ratingen was almost entirely destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War, leaving only about 100 inhabitants. Over a century later Johann Gottfried Brügelmann played a pivotal role in introducing industrialisation to Ratingen by building a cotton-spinning mill; he and his associate Carl Albrecht Delius are reported to have spied on a factory in Cromford (England) in 1781/82 to obtain the design for a water-driven spinning machine. The design and one of the machines were taken and used to build Brügelmann’s own mill; he is regarded as a pioneer of industrialisation and a key figure in Ratingen’s urban development. A working example of Brügelmann’s spinning mill can still be seen at the Cromford Industrial Museum in Ratingen.
In the 20th and 21st centuries Ratingen has established itself as a profitable location for the service and computer sectors. Hewlett Packard, Makita, Nokia and SAP have a presence here, as does Coca‑Cola, which relocated its site from Düsseldorf. Ratingen is also known for outlet stores such as s.Oliver, Esprit, Benetton and Tom Tailor. The old water-driven spinning machine did not survive to the present day — but industrial espionage, to the frustration of countless firms, certainly did.
Yet corporate data theft is not the only challenge our detectives in Ratingen address: modern companies also face breaches of non-compete clauses, sick-pay and expense-claim fraud, false sick notes, unauthorised secondary employment and many other offences. Unscrupulous competitors as well as disloyal employees unlawfully harm firms, and others — sometimes without monetary motive — take pleasure in property damage and vandalism, a recurring problem in the town. In these and many other cases our IHK-certified and experienced commercial detectives in Ratingen are at work. Contact us for a free, non-binding consultation on +49 203 3196 0052.
