Duisburg's cultural highlights range from the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra, to festivals and museums, as well as offerings from the independent scene and local events in the seven city districts. Naturally, our private investigators in Duisburg also encounter these leisure venues during their work: child custody investigations may take them to the explorado children's museum, suspected maintenance fraud leads to surveillance of target persons working in the catering sector, and cases of infidelity in partnerships may involve meetings with an affair at the cinema or theatre, etc. Duisburg demonstrates versatility in every respect: sightseeing, enjoying sun and water, exploring nature and wildlife, and sampling international cuisine. Yet the city also has a darker side …
In 2014, the Duisburg police published their crime report for the previous year, 2013, which recorded a threefold increase in homicide and manslaughter cases as well as burglaries. This was accompanied by a significant rise in suspects: 548 German suspects (an increase of 4.54 percent) and 736 non-German suspects (+12.26 percent). Also notable: there were five percent more residential burglaries than the previous year (+80 cases). Only 228 of these cases were solved – a rate of just 13.65 percent.
During the reporting year, there were also 8 homicide cases related to domestic violence, including one completed murder, two completed and five attempted manslaughter cases. In one of these, an infant was the victim of attempted manslaughter, and in one completed manslaughter case, a mother was killed by her son living in the same apartment. In addition – with an almost immeasurable dark figure – there were 1,240 cases of domestic violence, primarily minor and aggravated bodily harm. 407 victims of domestic violence were referred to appropriate counselling centres. Statistically, domestic violence occurs particularly frequently in families or relationships with a migration background.

The law for the criminal protection of stalking victims (§ 238 StGB Stalking) has been in force since April 2007. In 2013, a total of 122 cases were recorded in Duisburg, with a clearance rate of almost 92 percent. In total, 78 male and 17 female suspects were identified. With less than 1 percent, stalking is a numerically small offence – but for the victims, it represents an unacceptable intrusion into their personal and self-determination rights. Victims are watched, followed, receive anonymous calls and letters, sometimes with threatening content. Unwanted flower and gift deliveries, property damage and, in the worst cases, bodily harm confront the victims, often causing psychological trauma.
